System design and beyond

~5 min

In short

System design and low-level design (LLD) matter more as you gain experience, and less for your first job search. Freshers are more often asked for data structures and algorithms, plus basic object-oriented design. Larger design rounds usually come later. This page tells you when that changes and which sections of this site to use at each stage. The timing below is typical, not a rule.

What the sources say

  • Amazon ties its SDE interview preparation course to roles that need at least two years of experience, and it has separate preparation pages for SDE II and SDE III. Amazon's page does not mention system design by name. (Amazon, how we hire, checked 18 Oct 2026.)
  • Candidate reports say Amazon SDE II loops include a system design round. These are anecdotal. (Candidate report on a Substack blog, date unknown.)
  • Candidate reports say Amazon India campus loops include an LLD round. These are anecdotal too. (Candidate report on a prep site, 2026.)
  • Prep-site and forum consensus is that Google and similar companies usually do not give a strict system design round to new graduates, and some add a lighter design or object-oriented design round. No official Google statement was found. (Prep-site and forum posts, 2025-26.)

Inference from these: system design is usually expected from about two to three years of experience, which is roughly SDE II or L4-equivalent. Freshers more often face DSA plus basic OOD or LLD. Treat that as a rough guide, not a rule that every company follows.

What to learn now

You do not need a full design course before your first job. Focus on the foundations that make design possible later:

What to learn later

High-level design (HLD) covers how a whole system fits together: load, storage, caching, queues, and failure. Start with the HLD section once you have built at least one service that talks to a database and another service. Reading about HLD before you have built anything tends to stay abstract. Inference: that is why this site sends you to HLD after the basics, not before.

The next page, from your first job to a stronger one, covers what years one and two usually look like and how to build the record that gets you a better offer.

Try this

Pick one app you use every day. Write down three kinds of data it must store and three things it must handle when many people use it at once. Do not design it yet. The list is the start of HLD thinking.
