Contests and ratings¶
~7 min
In short¶
- Contest ratings measure how you do in timed contests on that one platform. They are useful for tracking your own progress.
- There is no official mapping between a rating and a job offer. No company or platform publishes one, and the author found none (searched 18 Oct 2026).
- Use ratings as a rough signal of your practice, not as a goal that gets you hired.
- Still, I recommend contests: competitive programming and DSA practice can make a strong-company offer possible by building speed on problems you have not seen. Do as many as you can.
Codeforces rating bands¶
Codeforces gives each user a rating and a title. According to Wikipedia's Codeforces article (fetched 18 Oct 2026), the bands are:
| Title | Rating |
|---|---|
| Newbie | up to 1199 |
| Pupil | 1200-1399 |
| Specialist | 1400-1599 |
| Expert | 1600-1899 |
| Candidate Master | 1900-2099 |
| Master | 2100-2299 |
| International Master | 2300-2399 |
| Grandmaster | 2400-2599 |
| International Grandmaster | 2600-2999 |
| Legendary Grandmaster | 3000-3999 |
Two more facts: Div. 3 contests are for users rated below 1600, and Div. 4 contests are for users rated below 1400. Since May 2018, users rated 1900-2099 can compete in both Div. 1 and Div. 2.
Wikipedia is a secondary source. Check the current bands on codeforces.com before you rely on them.
LeetCode contest badges¶
LeetCode's official discussion post on contest badges says: among users rated 1600 or higher, the top 5% get the Guardian badge and the top 25% get the Knight badge. Users below 1600 get no badge.
The post does not give numeric cutoffs. A third-party mirror gives roughly 1850 for Knight and roughly 2200 for Guardian, and those cutoffs shift from contest to contest. Treat the numbers as rough and check the current figures on LeetCode.
CodeChef and AtCoder¶
The author did not verify rating rules for CodeChef or AtCoder. Check their contest pages for the current rules: CodeChef contests and AtCoder contests.
What ratings do not tell you¶
No official mapping exists between Codeforces or LeetCode ratings and job offers, interview difficulty or pay. Pay ranges for different companies are in the reality-check section of this site, and they come from a separate source.
Some people in online forums say that typical interview problems feel like Codeforces Div. 2 problems A to C, and that people rated 2000 or above still fail interviews on communication and design. These are forum opinions, not facts. Read them as opinions from people who had their own experience: one Blind thread and another.
Author's guidance: sensible targets¶
These targets are the author's guidance. They are not from any company or platform.
For a first job: solve LeetCode medium-level problems consistently. Aim for a steady weekly number you can keep, and track it in the trackers. You do not need a rating to get an interview, and a rating is not a requirement.
For a stretch goal, such as top product or quant interviews: a Codeforces rating in the Specialist to Expert range (1400-1900), or a LeetCode contest rating around 1800 or above, can be a useful sign that you are strong at problem solving. These are indicators of strength, not requirements. A rating does not guarantee an offer, and having no rating does not rule one out.
If you reach a target and your interview results do not change, the next gap is probably not DSA. Look at practice method and your mock-interview log.
Try this¶
Make a LeetCode or Codeforces account if you do not have one. Solve one medium problem this week and check the current rating rules on the site. Write the rating band you are in on the first line of your practice log, and write down the date.
