Career switcher plan

~7 min

In short

You already work in another field, and you want to move into software. Your job is the constraint. You have perhaps 10 to 12 hours a week, and you cannot stop earning. This plan budgets that time, shows how to reuse your old career, and helps you explain the switch.

Be clear about the timeline. A vendor guide estimates 8 to 18 months to become job-ready from a non-CS background (Instahyre, July 2026). That is an estimate from a company that sells courses, not survey data, and it does not measure a job offer. An academic study of the Indian IT sector (AMCIS 2021) found that IT versus non-IT background matters, and that non-IT engineers faced mobility constraints in some emerging-technology roles. Plan for a long road, and do not treat the estimate as a promise.

Budget your 10 to 12 hours

These hours are a planning budget, not a fact about the market. One workable split:

  • Three weekday blocks of about one hour each, for a daily habit: a coding problem, or a lesson.
  • One longer block at the weekend, of around five to six hours, for a project or a mock round.
  • One short review on a weekday evening: five minutes to log what you did and what is next.

Protect the weekend block. Missing one week is fine. Plan a lighter week in advance rather than dropping several in a row.

Reuse what you already know

Your old career is an asset. Look at what you can already do:

  • Domain knowledge. If you worked in logistics, finance, healthcare or retail, you know which problems software must solve there. That is valuable for product, data and back-office roles.
  • Process and tools. Spreadsheets, reporting and testing map onto data analysis and QA work. The Instahyre guide ranks data analyst, QA and frontend roles as easier entry points, in its own view (https://resources.instahyre.com/blog/how-to-switch-to-tech-from-non-cs-background/, July 2026).
  • People skills. Stakeholder work and client calls are useful in any engineering team.

Choose one lane first

Trying to learn everything at once is the common failure. Pick one target, such as data analysis with Python and SQL, QA automation, or frontend development. Then use free foundations to reach it: CS50x (https://cs50.harvard.edu/x/, checked 18 Oct 2026), freeCodeCamp (https://www.freecodecamp.org/learn) or The Odin Project (https://www.theodinproject.com/) for web work, MIT's Missing Semester for the terminal and git (https://missing.csail.mit.edu/), and NPTEL for longer courses (https://nptel.ac.in/). Finish one course before starting another.

Explain the switch

Employers will ask why you moved. Cover three points: what you did before and what it taught you, what you started building and why, and what you can do now, shown in one project. Avoid calling the old career wasted. An example to adapt: "I ran reporting for a logistics firm and kept automating the spreadsheets. So I learned Python and SQL, built a tool that produces the monthly report in minutes, and now want to do that work at scale."

Where a degree route fits

If you want a structured programme, the IIT Madras BS in Data Science and Applications publishes its fees and deadlines. Its qualifier deadline for the January 2027 term is 29 Jan 2027 (https://study.iitm.ac.in/ds/, checked 18 Oct 2026). Fees are on https://study.iitm.ac.in/ds/academics.html. It is an option, not a requirement, and it is a large commitment in both time and money.

Honest limits

  • The 8 to 18 month estimate is a vendor's view. Your timeline depends on your hours, your lane, and the market.
  • No public data was found on how often career switchers get software roles in India.
  • Some employers prefer a CS background. Your domain knowledge helps, but you still need to show code.

Targets, in order

# Target You can move on when
1 Write your reuse list and choose one lane The lane and the reuse list are saved
2 Shell, git, and a first programming course lesson each week You can make a commit from the terminal
3 CS50x first half, daily one-hour blocks You have written programs that read input
4 CS50x second half, weekly weekend block You have a small tool that solves one problem from your old job
5 Lane course, part one (Python or web, depending on your lane) You can build a small program in your lane
6 Lane course, part two; first portfolio project starts The project has a readme and a plan
7 Simple data structures and problem practice, one set a week You can solve an easy problem and explain it
8 Portfolio project, with a database or an API The project runs on your machine
9 Resume for the new lane, using the reuse list Each resume line points to a project
10 Second portfolio project, or a contribution to an open source project You can explain its trade-offs
11 Mock rounds with a friend, and the switch story practised aloud You can tell the switch story in two minutes
12 Applications to roles in your lane, and a log of the replies You have applied to roles and written a review of what to change

Try this

What to do this week: Write down your reuse list in one page: three pieces of domain knowledge, three tools or processes, and three people skills from your current job. Then block your three weekday hours and your weekend block in your calendar for the next four weeks.
