4. Cause-and-Effect Contention & Pathology Matrix¶
| Root Event / Pathology | Primary Cellular Symptom | Immediate Downstream Blast Radius | Emergency Diagnostic & Recovery Action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Checkpoint Alignment Timeout | Checkpoint alignment time \(> 30,000\text{ms}\) | Checkpoint Failure & SLA Breach: In-flight buffers block barrier alignment; job repeatedly restarts. | Enable Unaligned Checkpoints (enableUnalignedCheckpoints()); enable Buffer Debloating. |
Data Skew on keyBy() |
Single task slot CPU 100%, other slots 5% | Backpressure Cascade: Skewed worker stalls; upstream network buffers fill; entire pipeline pauses. | Redesign partition key; add random salt suffix or execute pre-aggregation. |
| RocksDB Off-Heap Memory Leak | Native Linux RSS grows until host OOM Kill | TaskManager Process Death: Kubernetes kills pod via OOMKilled; entire job fails over. |
Enable strict memory bounding: state.backend.rocksdb.memory.managed: true. |
| Sink Transaction Timeout | Sink 2PC transaction open \(> \text{Kafka } \text{transaction.max.timeout.ms}\) | Data Loss / Fatal Crash: Kafka aborts expired transaction; Flink sink cannot commit; crash loop. | Ensure checkpoint_interval < transaction.timeout.ms; tune checkpoint frequency. |
| Event Time Watermark Starvation | One Kafka partition receives zero data | Window Never Fires: Watermark tracks minimum across all partitions; single idle partition freezes all windows! | Mark idle partitions using .withIdleness(Duration.ofMinutes(1)). |
5. Rapid Revision Flashcards¶
- What is the difference between Aligned and Unaligned Checkpoints?
- Aligned Checkpoints: Operators wait until barriers arrive on ALL input channels before snapshotting state, buffering incoming records on fast channels.
-
Unaligned Checkpoints: The moment a barrier arrives on ANY channel, it overtakes in-flight data, snapshots the operator state AND the in-flight channel buffers, eliminating alignment wait times under high backpressure.
-
How does Flink achieve Exactly-Once semantics end-to-end?
By combining Asynchronous Chandy-Lamport Checkpointing (for deterministic state recovery) with Two-Phase Commit (2PC) protocol sinks (TwoPhaseCommitSinkFunction). -
Why does Flink default to RocksDB for large-scale state instead of Heap?
TheHashMapStateBackendstores state as Java objects on the JVM heap, triggering massive GC pauses and limited by physical RAM.EmbeddedRocksDBStateBackendstores serialized byte arrays in off-heap C++ memory and spills to local NVMe SSDs, supporting terabytes of state per node. -
What is a Watermark in Event-Time stream processing?
A Watermark is an in-band control record containing a timestamp \(T\). It serves as a mathematical assertion: "The engine asserts that no subsequent events with timestamp \(t < T\) will arrive." When Watermark \(T\) crosses window boundary \(W\), the window is triggered. -
How does Credit-Based Flow Control prevent out-of-memory errors?
A producer node cannot send network buffers unless the downstream consumer node has explicitly granted credits (representing available pre-allocated input buffers). If the consumer slows down, credits drop to 0, and the producer stops transmitting at the network layer.
