1. The Flink Total Process Memory Model¶
TaskManager memory sizing is strictly mathematical. Flink enforces a declarative memory architecture to prevent native memory leaks from crashing container environments:
Total Process Memory (e.g. 16 GB Container)
┌────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ JVM Metaspace (256 MB) + JVM Overhead (1.6 GB / 10% Total) │
│ - HotSpot class metadata, native threads, compiler code caches │
├────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┤
│ Total Flink Memory (~14.1 GB) │
│ ┌────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐ │
│ │ Framework Heap (128 MB) + Framework Off-Heap (128 MB) │ │
│ │ - Internal TaskManager communication & coordination │ │
│ ├────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┤ │
│ │ Task Heap Memory (~5.5 GB) │ │
│ │ - User Java objects, operators, HashMapStateBackend (if used) │ │
│ ├────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┤ │
│ │ Managed Memory (~5.6 GB / 40% of Flink Memory) │ │
│ │ - Shared Block Cache & Write Buffers for RocksDB State Backend │ │
│ │ - In-memory batch sort and hash-join buffers │ │
│ ├────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┤ │
│ │ Network Memory (~1.4 GB / 10% of Flink Memory) │ │
│ │ - NetworkBufferPool (Netty 32KB direct off-heap buffers) │ │
│ └────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘ │
└────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
2. RocksDB Native Memory Management¶
When using EmbeddedRocksDBStateBackend, RocksDB is a native C++ library compiled into the JVM via JNI. Its memory is allocated directly from the Linux OS heap via C malloc, completely invisible to the Java Garbage Collector!
RocksDB Off-Heap Memory Anatomy:
┌────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ RocksDB Block Cache (70% of Managed Memory) │
│ - Uncompressed SSTable data blocks, index blocks, filter blocks │
├────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┤
│ Write Buffer Manager / Memtables (30% of Managed Memory) │
│ - In-memory SkipLists holding active un-flushed write mutations │
├────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┤
│ Index & Filter Overhead │
│ - Bloom filters for SSTables loaded into off-heap memory │
└────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
2.1 Enforcing Strict Memory Bounding¶
Without coordination, each Task Slot spawns an independent RocksDB instance. If a TaskManager has 8 slots, 8 uncoordinated RocksDB engines will allocate memory independently, quickly exceeding physical RAM and provoking a Linux OOMKilled termination!
Production Configuration (flink-conf.yaml):¶
# Strict Shared Memory Bounding for RocksDB
state.backend.rocksdb.memory.managed: true
state.backend.rocksdb.memory.write-buffer-ratio: 0.3 # 30% for Memtables
state.backend.rocksdb.memory.high-priority-pool-ratio: 0.1 # 10% for Index/Filters
memory.managed: true is set, Flink injects a single Shared Cache across all RocksDB instances within the TaskManager, capping total native memory strictly to the configured Managed Memory budget.
3. Preventing Kubernetes OOMKilled Disasters¶
In Kubernetes or YARN, containers are hard-limited by cgroups (limits.memory).
3.1 The Fatal Mistake¶
A common error is setting:
# Kubernetes Pod Spec:
resources:
limits:
memory: "8Gi"
# flink-conf.yaml:
taskmanager.memory.total-flink.size: 8g # FATAL ERROR!
SIGKILL (Exit Code 137: OOMKilled)!
3.2 The Proper Equation¶
Always configure taskmanager.memory.total-process.size and ensure it exactly matches the Kubernetes container limit:
